How to become a permanent makeup artist

Permanent makeup has become one of the most exciting and meaningful specialties in the beauty and aesthetics industry. Skilled artists have the ability to simplify daily routines, enhance natural features, and in many cases restore confidence after hair loss, surgery, or skin changes.

If you are researching how to become a permanent makeup artist, you may already realize that the information online can be confusing. Some sources make it sound like anyone can take a short class and immediately begin tattooing faces. In reality, the path to becoming a professional PMU artist involves a combination of licensing, education, hands on training, and continued learning.

At DAELA Academy, we believe the best artists are built through responsible education and mentorship. This guide will walk you through how the industry actually works, what training looks like, and what to expect as you begin your journey into cosmetic tattooing.

Permanent makeup, often called PMU or cosmetic tattooing, is a specialized form of tattooing that enhances natural features by implanting pigment into the skin.

Common treatments include

  • Brow tattoos such as powder brows or machine hairstrokes
  • Lip blush tattoos that restore natural lip color and shape
  • Eyeliner tattoos that define the lash line
  • Areola restoration tattoos after breast surgery
  • Scar camouflage for certain types of scarring

Unlike traditional body tattoos, permanent makeup is designed to create soft, natural looking results that complement each person’s features.

Clients often seek cosmetic tattooing to simplify their routines, restore symmetry, or feel more confident in their skin.

A permanent makeup artist blends artistry, technical skill, and client care. While the work is creative, it also requires a strong understanding of skin, pigment, and safe tattooing practices.

A typical appointment may include

  • Client consultation and expectation setting
  • Custom mapping and facial design
  • Color theory and pigment selection
  • Machine technique and depth control
  • Skin assessment and healing guidance
  • Follow up appointments and touchups

Because these treatments are performed on the face, trust and precision are essential. Clients rely on artists to guide them safely through the process and create results that age beautifully over time.

Yes. In most states, performing permanent makeup legally requires a professional license of some sort.

Depending on the state, PMU may fall under

  • Tattoo licensing
  • Body art practitioner licensing
  • Cosmetology licensing
  • Esthetics licensing

Requirements often include bloodborne pathogen certification, health department registration, and completion of state regulated licensing steps.

It is important to understand that training programs do not issue professional licenses. Licensing is handled by state regulatory agencies.

Permanent makeup training programs like those offered at DAELA Academy function as continuing education. They teach specialized cosmetic tattoo techniques to professionals who already hold the appropriate license.

We always encourage students to research their local licensing requirements so they can pursue their education responsibly.

Everyone starts as a beginner! Some artists begin their careers straight from high school and others come from backgrounds such as

  • Esthetics
  • Cosmetology
  • Traditional tattooing
  • Medical aesthetics
  • Nursing

Some students already have experience in the beauty industry, while others are newer professionals who are working toward licensing in their state.

What matters most is a commitment to learning the craft carefully, respecting the responsibility of tattooing faces, and continuing education beyond the first course.

At DAELA Academy, we focus on building thoughtful, skilled artists who approach the industry with care. Whether you are newly licensed or a pro wanting to add a new technique to your portfolio or up your skills on the one you currently do, our classes are detail oriented and highly praised.

High quality PMU education covers much more than how to hold a machine.

Students typically learn

  • Skin anatomy and wound healing
  • Pigment chemistry and color correction
  • Safe needle depth and machine control
  • Brow design and facial symmetry
  • Lip mapping and shape refinement
    Sanitation and infection prevention
  • Client consultations and expectation management

Many programs also include live model work so students can gain real world experience under instructor guidance.

At DAELA Academy, education is designed to be both technical and supportive. We believe strong training comes from a balance of clear instruction, hands on practice, and thoughtful mentorship.

Most PMU classes are specific to their specialty and should be inclusive of everything you need to know to provide a specific service. DAELA in-person classes take 2-3 days and online learning takes about 10 hours to complete before an in-person class. In-person you will learn:

  • Fundamental theory
  • Skin science and healing
  • Color theory and pigment behavior
  • Machine technique and hand control
  • Practice on latex or artificial skin
  • Live Models

While foundational training provides the essential skills to begin practicing, mastery takes time.

Most artists continue developing their expertise through

  • Hours of practice on fake skins
  • Models
  • Advanced training courses
  • Mentorship
  • Online continuing education
  • Years of hands on experience

Permanent makeup is a craft that improves through thoughtful repetition and ongoing learning. Because no one can master a specialty immediately, we advocate for many hours of practice before working on a client or model.

We strongly advocate for proper licensing, following health and safety protocols, and continuing education to improve skills.

Permanent makeup training is a professional skill based education and pricing can vary widely depending on the program.

Courses may range from roughly three thousand dollars to ten thousand dollars or more depending on

  • Length of training
  • Class size
  • Instructor experience
  • Equipment included
  • Number of live models
  • Post training support

DAELA Academy in-person courses are $3800 with a 2-student limit and One-on-One courses which provide customization for your skill level, are $4800. These comprehensive classes include online learning modules.

Many artists see PMU education as a long term investment in their careers. With the right training and experience, permanent makeup can become a sustainable and fulfilling profession.

Continuing education in-person and online courses range from $99+ at DAELA Academy.

For many artists, permanent makeup becomes both a creative outlet and a meaningful career.

Benefits often include

  • Creative and artistic work
  • Flexible scheduling
  • High demand for skilled artists
  • The ability to specialize in different treatments
  • Opportunities to build long term client relationships

Many artists eventually develop specialties such as

  • Natural brow artistry
  • Lip blush tattooing
  • Eyeliner tattooing
  • Paramedical tattooing
  • Camuflaje de cicatrices

One of the most rewarding aspects of cosmetic tattooing is the impact it can have on confidence. Clients often leave appointments feeling more like themselves again.

Income varies depending on experience, location, and specialization. because so many factors are involved with success the income ranges vary greatly. A range of $25,000 to $150,000 per year amongst various artists would be expected.

Permanent makeup treatments often range between $500-$1000 per appointment.

Clients don’t come easy but as artists gain experience and build trust within their communities, many are able to develop consistent client demand and strong referral networks.

The most successful artists tend to focus on

  • High quality work
  • Safe technique
  • Strong client relationships
  • Continued education
  • Strong online presence

These elements help build both reputation and long term career stability. If you are establishing a new independent business then taking the time to learn some business skills is just as important as learning technical skills!

Choosing the right training program is one of the most important decisions an aspiring artist will make.

Things to consider include

  • Instructor experience and reputation
  • Healed results within the instructor’s portfolio
  • Small class sizes that allow for hands on learning
  • Live model opportunities
  • Clear education about licensing requirements
  • Post training mentorship and support

Responsible training programs are transparent about the difference between education and licensing.

They also emphasize safety, ethics, and realistic expectations for students entering the field.

Ofrecemos desayuno continental, almuerzo y bebidas. Si tiene alguna restricción alimentaria, por favor, avísenos con anticipación. Estaremos encantados de adaptarnos a sus necesidades; de no ser posible, le recomendaremos que traiga su propia comida.
